Tragic Data: 14 Children Victims of Traffic Accidents and 5 Drowning Cases Since the Beginning of 2026
SadaNews - Over the weekend, tragic events began with the death of a 3-year-old child in a traffic accident in the village of Majd al-Krum, and the drowning of another 2-year-old child in a swimming pool in the Galilee region.
In Tiberias, a 4-year-old child sustained moderate injuries after falling from a height of 4 meters, a fate also faced by another child of the same age in the village of Sawahid al-Hamireh near Shfaram, who fell from the same height and suffered moderate injuries. In the city of Tamra, another 3-year-old child died after suffering serious injuries from a heavy object falling on him.
According to data published by the "Beterem" organization for child safety, since the beginning of 2026, around 14 children up to the age of 17 have lost their lives in traffic accidents, including incidents of being run over, as an infant died due to a fall from a height, while approximately 5 children drowned, two of whom were from the Arab community, noting that the drowning incidents occurred in swimming pools.
Looking at the past five years (2021 - 2025), 252 children and youths lost their lives in traffic accidents, including 100 children who died as pedestrians. It has been found that the average age of children who were run over as pedestrians was 7 years, with 61% of them being males, and 47% ranging in age from birth to 4 years.
Regarding drowning, 82 children lost their lives, including 34 from the Arab community, with 16 children being four years old or younger. The data also indicates that 47% of drowning cases occurred in swimming pools, and that 85% of the victims were boys.
In the last decade (2016 - 2025), 27 children lost their lives due to injuries from heavy objects, and 47 children due to falling from heights.
The Director General of the "Beterem" organization, Orly Silvinger, commented on these tragic events, stating: "We are talking about a tragic weekend. I extend my condolences to the families who lost their children, and I wish a speedy recovery to the injured. I reiterate time and again that these incidents prove that young children are helpless and cannot protect themselves. I appeal to parents: do not say, 'This won't happen to me.' Children at this age need effective monitoring by adults, including constant visual contact and being in close proximity, with complete dedication free from any distractions, including mobile phones, because children explore the world and everything around them, and a moment of distraction can lead to a tragic incident."
