Criticism of Haifa Municipality: "Selective" Violations Against Arab Interests Due to Signage

SadaNews - The National Democratic Assembly - Haifa branch condemned what it described as "selective and discriminatory" policies adopted by the Haifa Municipality in the enforcement of the signage law. This condemnation follows the imposition of fines on several Arab businesses under the pretext of not meeting licensing conditions, primarily the absence of the Hebrew language.

The assembly clarified in a statement that these actions raise serious questions about the mechanism for enforcing the law, especially amidst complaints from Arab business owners who have been penalized, while there are widespread signs in English only throughout the city without similar actions taken against them.

The statement noted that the municipality's reliance on an auxiliary law dating back to 1995 does not align with the reality of Haifa as a multicultural city, as described by the municipality itself, asserting that current policies reflect a clear contradiction, particularly in light of the tense situations that require building trust among the city’s components rather than deepening feelings of discrimination.

The assembly called for fair and equal application of the laws across all businesses, urging the municipality to review its policies to ensure the respect of Arab citizens' rights.

In this context, council member from the assembly, Sharbel Dakour, sent an urgent letter to Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav, calling for an examination of the law enforcement policy and halting what he described as discrimination. He also mentioned his visit to a restaurant where the owner was forced to remove his sign after receiving a warning from the municipality following a complaint "based on the language of the sign".

Dakour affirmed that these cases are not isolated but part of a series of complaints from Arab business owners, emphasizing his intention to follow up on the issue within the municipal council and work to bring it to discussion to ensure fair application of the law.

As of the time of preparing this news, the Haifa Municipality had not issued any official response to the criticisms directed at it.
