Carney: The attack on Iran may violate international law, but unfortunately we support it
SadaNews - Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the actions of the United States and Israel against Iran may "not be consistent with international law", yet he confirmed his country's "unfortunate" support for those attacks.
He added to reporters, "It is up to the United States and Israel to make their arguments and determine whether this is the case or not. It is up to other experts - I am not a lawyer, and certainly not an international lawyer - who are more experienced than I am to make that decision."
ABC News reported Carney as saying that Canada "unfortunately" supports the efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons "because the current conflict is another example of the failure of the international system."
Carney added: "Despite decades of United Nations Security Council resolutions, the tireless efforts of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and a series of sanctions and diplomatic frameworks, the Iranian nuclear threat persists. And now, the United States and Israel have acted without involving the United Nations or consulting with allies, including Canada."
Carney called for a "rapid de-escalation". He added, "Resolving this crisis requires a commitment to a broader political solution. Diplomatic engagement is essential to avoid a broader and deeper conflict."
The United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran last Saturday morning, igniting a war that has thus far resulted in the deaths of hundreds, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and security officials in Iran.
Tehran responded by launching missiles and drones towards Israel, and what it describes as "American bases" in regional countries, although some of these resulted in casualties and material damage.
