Are the security forces capable of ensuring Palestinian national readiness?!
Mr. Vice President of the State of Palestine, brother Hussein Sheikh, recently chaired an extensive security meeting that included all leaders of the security agencies, along with the Assistant Commander of the Security Forces, Ismail Jaber, and in the presence of the Prime Minister, Dr. Muhammad Mustafa. Sheikh emphasized during this meeting the necessity of maintain the highest levels of readiness and discipline, enhancing citizen trust in official institutions, promoting national readiness, reinforcing the rule of law, safeguarding citizens' dignity, and strengthening civil peace, asserting that security and stability form a fundamental pillar in protecting the rights and national constants of our people!
But what does Sheikh mean by maintaining national readiness? How will mutual trust between the citizen and his institutions be enhanced? What means can be used to achieve what the Vice President is asking from the security forces?
Undoubtedly, the primary role of the Palestinian security forces towards the citizen revolves around protecting his security, freedoms, and dignity, and maintaining public order according to the rule of law. This includes providing security and protecting public and private property, enforcing the law fairly, and respecting human rights, and the list goes on. However, in reality, are the security forces truly fulfilling their role in providing at least a minimum of security and safety among our people in the occupied West Bank? On the other hand, can the Palestinian security forces, with their military capabilities, which are equivalent to zero compared to what the Israeli occupiers possess, confront and deter what the Palestinian Arab people and their properties and resources face?
First, we should not forget that the Palestinian security personnel are our children, and they have made sacrifices of martyrs, wounded, and prisoners during their attempts to protect the land and people. It is no longer hidden from anyone that the Israeli occupation authorities, especially since the rise of the far-right with its biblical tendencies, have been trying through their practices, procedures, and acts of killing and destruction that have affected humans, stones, and livestock, along with incursions and blockades imposed on the occupied Palestinian territories, enticing the Palestinian security forces in the West Bank into direct armed confrontations to use that as a justification to end what remains of the Palestinian Authority, which is crumbling and to eliminate it. Perhaps distributing tens of thousands of weapons to the extremist settlers in the West Bank falls within the Israeli plan aimed at ending the Palestinian existence and intimidating and displacing the Palestinian Arab people?!
It is no longer a secret that the security policy pursued by the Palestinian leadership in the West Bank is based on preventing any direct armed friction with the occupation forces as it serves the interest of the Palestinian people, despite some past violations and accumulations. Some may not agree with this opinion, but it actually prevents the creation of a strong justification for the occupying state to attack the Palestinian people, although the occupying state, in its current structure, arrogance, and defiance of all international laws, does not need justifications to commit crimes.
It is no longer a secret to say that the Palestinian leadership, backed by its security forces, and according to the security doctrine currently being pursued, has become unable to provide what is required of it, and perhaps it opts to stand as a bystander until God decides on a matter that has been set in motion! Instead of reinforcing trust with their people, they find themselves in an adversarial position, and the recent incident in Tammoun is a prime example, while the citizen finds himself alone in facing the Israeli war machine and the actions of radical settlers! Therefore, some see such meetings as a mere smokescreen for the citizens, while the main goal is to thwart any attempt that might touch the fragile existing system, which one of the security forces' tasks is to protect at any cost, without the slightest concern for the citizens' needs! But is that the end of the story, thus yielding and accepting the humiliating conditions before us? Or is there still something that can be done?
The readiness mentioned by the Vice President cannot be ensured solely by the security forces, but it must be primarily centered on fortifying the internal front first across all its colors and segments as a basis on which to build a strategy aimed at enhancing resilience and confronting aggression in all its forms, not one based on repression and oppression. The internal front is the foundation of any society’s robustness, and the success or failure of the threats and challenges posed by Zionism hinges on the strength and fortification of the internal front to enable the masses to continue resisting and confronting. Without fortifying the internal front, no success will be achieved in any step to mitigate external risks, and it is no secret to say that the Palestinian internal front is currently very fragile and needs diligent work from all Palestinians to strengthen it.
