Due to Trump's Sanctions.. Canada Cancels Joint Ceremony with the US for Bridge Opening

SadaNews - A joint ceremony between the United States and Canada is no longer expected to take place next Friday to celebrate the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Detroit and the city of Windsor in Ontario, following U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of imposing a 50% tariff on most Canadian goods.

Trump accused Canada, while announcing the tariffs, of unfairly discriminating against American cars, alcoholic beverages, and dairy products, leading to heightened tensions with one of the United States' closest allies.

A spokesperson for Canadian Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson stated in an email that "in light of the trade actions threatened by the United States earlier this week, it would be inappropriate to proceed with a celebratory event between the two countries."

This move came after U.S. and Canadian officials reached an agreement earlier this month to open the Gordie Howe International Bridge, following delays related to disputes between the two countries.

Canada now intends to hold its own ceremony on Friday, while it remains unclear whether the United States will hold a separate ceremony.

Two American officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations, suggested they still expect the bridge to open to traffic on July 27, but they have become less certain than they were before.
