The Central Court in Haifa postpones the decision on the administrative detention of Tamer Khalifa until April 23
SadaNews - The occupying court in Haifa has decided to postpone its decision in the case of the administrative detention of activist Tamer Khalifa from the city of Umm al-Fahm until April 23 of the upcoming month.
The court held a session to review Khalifa's case following the imposition of a six-month administrative detention on him by the decision of Israeli Security Minister, Israel Katz, about a week after he was placed under house arrest.
Representing Khalifa are both the "Mizan" Center for Human Rights and the "Adalah" legal center.
In this context, a protest was organized in front of the court in Haifa to reject the policy of administrative detentions, where participants raised slogans reading: "Stop Administrative Detentions", "The Torture of Prisoners is a War Crime", and "No to Administrative Detentions".
Administrative detention was imposed on Khalifa on March 25, lasting six months, by the decision of the Israeli Security Minister, following a week of his release by the decision of the Peace Court in Haifa.
This decision comes after his detention for nearly 15 days in Jalameh prison, during which he underwent dozens of interrogation sessions.
Lawyer Omar Khameisi from the "Mizan" Center for Human Rights, who represents Khalifa, told "Arabs 48": "The session held today was relatively long because Tamer's case does not resemble other cases, especially since from the very first moment he was interrogated, all suspicions were refuted, including the allegations concerning contact with an external agent, and there was no threat or attempt to threaten the security of the state".
He pointed out regarding the detention case: "Contrary to what the prosecution insists, the Peace Court issued a decision to transfer Tamer to house arrest with deportation, confirming that the detainee poses no danger, especially since the prosecution did not appeal the court's decision, which stipulates his transfer to house arrest. Therefore, there are many questions directed at the prosecution, and we await their response".
Khameisi concluded his remarks by explaining: "The court will decide regarding Tamer on April 23, concerning his case of detention, and it will decide whether he will be released, the duration of the administrative detention will be reduced, or he will remain in detention".
For his part, Jamil Safouri, a member of the "Sons of the Country" movement, told "Arabs 48": "The issue of administrative detentions has become a source of anxiety for families, as files that do not provide the possibility of filing indictments result in detainees being transferred to administrative detention without charges".
He added: "What is happening today in terms of persecution and rising extremism was expected, in light of the reality of occupation, and we are living in a new phase under these policies and persecutions".
