Macron: Negotiations between Lebanon and Israel Depend on Tel Aviv's Approval
SadaNews - French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel remain contingent upon Israel giving the green light, despite Lebanese President Joseph Aoun's declaration of readiness for such talks.
Macron stated, following a European summit in Brussels, that there is no French proposal that includes Lebanon recognizing Israel, denying reports about an initiative of this nature.
He emphasized that France's role is limited to supporting the Lebanese authorities in helping them formulate a path for resolution and facilitating direct discussions with the Israeli side, expressing hope that this could be achieved soon.
He clarified that the success of the negotiations requires the readiness of the delegations and Israel's approval, noting that Beirut has shown readiness, while the decision remains in the hands of Tel Aviv.
Macron also affirmed that the task of disarming Hezbollah falls on the Lebanese army, considering Israeli military operations, whether ground or air, "inappropriate and unacceptable" under international law.
In this context, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barot announced his unplanned visit to Israel, following a tour in Beirut, to discuss security issues, humanitarian assistance, and ways to reduce escalation in the region.
