Trump praises talks with Iran and confirms their resumption at the beginning of next week

SadaNews - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that Washington held "very good talks" regarding Iran, following the indirect negotiations that took place between the United States and Iran in Oman, reaffirming that both sides will meet again "at the beginning of next week."

Trump added to reporters aboard Air Force One while heading to Mar-a-Lago in Florida for the weekend, "We had very good talks regarding Iran, and it seems that Iran is very eager to reach an agreement."

He added: "We will meet again at the beginning of next week."

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who headed his country's delegation to the talks, also praised in a statement to Iranian state television the "extremely positive atmosphere, we exchanged arguments and presented the other party with our viewpoints," adding that both sides "agreed to continue the negotiations."

Araghchi emphasized that "the discussions are focused exclusively on the nuclear file, and we are not looking into any other file with the Americans," while the United States insists that the talks should also address its ballistic missile program and its support for armed groups in the region.

The Iranian Foreign Minister urged Washington to stop its "threats" against his country to allow the negotiations to continue, explaining that the negotiators will decide on ways to "move forward" after consultations with both capitals.

Washington announced shortly after the end of the negotiation round new sanctions on the Iranian oil sector, which included 15 entities, two individuals, and 14 ships.

This is the first round of talks since the U.S. launched airstrikes in June against key sites of Iran's nuclear program during the twelve-day war initiated by Israel against Iran.

The Iranian state television reported that they are taking place indirectly, while the Omani Foreign Ministry published images showing Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi meeting with both delegations separately.

However, the American website "Axios" reported from two sources that direct discussions took place between Araghchi and Whittaker and Kushner in Oman.

Oman's Foreign Minister said on "X": "Very serious discussions took place between Iran and the United States in Muscat today," adding that it was "helpful to clarify the Iranian and American positions and identify areas for possible progress."

Araghchi had confirmed that his country is "ready to defend its sovereignty and national security against any excessive demands or American adventures."

He wrote on the X platform, "Iran enters diplomacy with open eyes and a solid memory of last year... We engage in talks in good faith and firmly uphold our rights."
