The Supreme Court to Hear on Thursday a Petition Demanding an Autopsy for a Young Man from Ramla Killed by Israeli Army Gunfire
SadaNews - The Israeli Supreme Court will review an urgent petition tomorrow, Thursday at 9:00 AM, submitted by the "Adala" legal center on behalf of the family of the young man Moamen Abu Riyash from the city of Ramla, demanding an immediate autopsy of his body in the presence of a supervising physician from the family, and to hand over the body to his relatives for burial in Ramla immediately after the autopsy is completed.
Young Abu Riyash was killed by Israeli occupation forces on December 7, 2025, in the Qalqilya area, while he was sitting with his friends, according to field testimonies and journalistic sources. Since his death nearly two months ago, military authorities have continued to withhold his body, refusing to conduct an autopsy or provide any substantial response regarding the legal basis for the detention or the timing of the body's release, despite repeated appeals from the family and their lawyer; according to a statement from the "Adala" center.
"Adala" indicated that the petition was submitted by attorney Hadeel Abu Saleh from the center in collaboration with an independent lawyer appointed by the family. Following this, the court issued a decision to schedule a session to consider it at the mentioned time, and obligated the state to provide its response to the petition 48 hours before the session at the latest.
The petition requested that the Supreme Court issue a conditional order requiring official authorities to provide legal reasons for refusing or delaying the immediate autopsy of young Moamen Abu Riyash's body to determine the cause of death, in the presence of a supervising physician from the family, and to hand over the body immediately upon the completion of the autopsy to his relatives, allowing for expedited burial in his hometown according to their beliefs and religious rituals.
It also warned that the continued detention of the body without a clear legal basis constitutes a violation of the rule of law and the fundamental rights of the family, as well as a serious infringement of their right to know the circumstances and causes of death, in addition to undermining the principle of obligation to disclose the truth and obstructing an effective investigation into the circumstances of the killing.
Attorney Hadeel Abu Saleh, who submitted the petition and advocates before the court, stated that "the actions of the military prosecution and its disregard for the family’s correspondence constitute unacceptable behavior and a clear affront to the dignity and constitutional rights of the family. Up to this moment, the family is still waiting to receive a substantive response for the first time, and the response submitted by the state to the court may be the first real answer they receive. Accordingly, we will argue before the court to prevent the continued violation of the family's rights."
