Signing of a Twinning Agreement Between the Palestinian City of Nablus and the British Brent
SadaNews - In a step aimed at enhancing cultural and humanitarian ties, an official twinning agreement was signed between the Palestinian city of Nablus and the Brent council in the British capital, London.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Nihad Khnafer, head of the Palestinian community in Britain, representing the city of Nablus, in the presence of a notable turnout from the Arab and Palestinian communities, along with several regional members, representatives from the General Union of Palestinian Students, members of the Brent council, and supporters of the Palestinian cause.
Dr. Khnafer emphasized in his speech that this twinning represents a connection to Nablus's rich history and culture, praising the efforts of the twinning committee in Brent, led by Mr. Ihtisham Afzal, and his deputy, Mr. Yahya Sarhan, who were among the early founders of the initiative.
This agreement gains importance as it embodies solidarity with Palestine in Britain, and signifies a success for the mechanisms of popular diplomacy in establishing direct bridges between the citizens of the two cities. He pointed out that adopting popular diplomacy opens new windows away from political diplomacy, which often fails to cover cultural and historical aspects and issues related to identity, viewed through a narrow political lens that does not serve the broader framework, particularly in bringing peoples closer together. The twinning committee has announced a joint action plan with the Palestinian community association to develop and enhance future twinning programs.
