Sudan Tops Global Humanitarian Crises Watchlist for the Third Year
SadaNews - Sudan has once again topped the "Global Humanitarian Crises Watchlist" published by the "International Rescue Committee," which was released today, Tuesday, amid an ongoing conflict that has claimed the lives of tens of thousands, followed by the Palestinian Territories, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Haiti.
This is the third consecutive year that Sudan has led the list, which highlights the 20 countries most at risk of new humanitarian emergencies or worsening existing crises.
David Miliband, the CEO of the International Rescue Committee, stated in his announcement that "what the committee is witnessing on the ground is not a tragic incident. The world is not only failing to respond to the crisis, but actions and words are contributing to its exacerbation and prolongation."
He added, "The scale of the crisis in Sudan, which has topped the watchlist for the third consecutive year and has now become the largest recorded humanitarian crisis ever, is evidence of this dysfunction."
More than 12 million people have already been displaced due to the ongoing war in Sudan, where humanitarian workers lack the necessary resources to assist the fleeing population, many of whom have suffered theft and loss of relatives due to violence, in addition to cases of rape.
The Palestinian Territories, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Haiti followed Sudan on the humanitarian crises watchlist.
The International Rescue Committee stated that although these countries account for only 12% of the world's population, they represent 89% of those in need of humanitarian assistance.
It is also projected that these countries will host more than half of those living in extreme poverty worldwide by 2029.
The war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023 has led to the deaths of tens of thousands of people and the displacement of millions, causing what the United Nations describes as "the worst humanitarian crisis in the world."
The other countries on the list include: Myanmar, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, Burkina Faso, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Cameroon, Chad, Colombia, Niger, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria, Ukraine, and Yemen.
