Lawyers Syndicate: Imposing sanctions on UN rapporteur Albanese is a violation of international agreements
SadaNews - The Palestinian Bar Association considered that the sanctions imposed by the U.S. State Department on Francesca Albanese, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, due to her mandated duties as a special rapporteur for the UN and her human rights activities related to this issue, is a clear humiliation of the United Nations and a serious violation of its charter.
The association emphasized that respecting the rules of international law and international humanitarian law is the basis for the stability of the international system, and that the continued policy of granting the occupying power a status that surpasses the dictates of international law, including any targeting of international observers, judges, and inspectors, and the use of the veto, will only lead to undermining the international justice system and replicating the experience of the League of Nations through the UN's failure to achieve its stated purposes in its founding charter, particularly in the field of justice, upholding the rule of law, and protecting human rights.
The association also stressed that imposing individual sanctions on human rights defenders is considered illegal and unethical behavior, and will not deter those with a conscience from fulfilling their professional and humanitarian duty to expose crimes and advocate for justice and human dignity.
