Post-Eighth Conference Challenges of Fatah Movement

The holding of the eighth conference of the Fatah Movement has stirred a lot of controversy, particularly regarding the mechanism for selecting conference members and the neutrality of the membership committee, as well as its final outcomes, along with rumors of manipulation of results, as expressed by Qaddura Fares, who called for a revision of the outcome.

The conclusion of the conference does not mean that the movement has regained its vigor or resolved all its internal issues or obligations to confront the Zionist enemy. Here, urgent matters arise that need addressing, such as: formulating a strategy to confront the occupation, the political program of the movement, the division between the two sections of the homeland, internal divisions within the Fatah Movement, appeasement of those dissatisfied and protesting against the conference results, and correcting the movement's relationship with other factions and parties, including those within the organization like the Popular Front.

As for the Gaza Strip, the positive aspect was the selection of three central committee members from those residing in the sector: Abu Maher Hallas, Eyad Safi, and Tayseer Al-Bardini, which is a first-time occurrence and is what we had demanded before the conference was convened.

As for the post-conference challenges, they lie in the relationship that will exist between these members regarding the distribution of tasks among them either regionally or functionally, ensuring the existence of an integrated vision to face organizational erosion and prevent overlapping of powers, which also requires abandoning individualism in leadership and establishing a small leadership council for the sector that meets periodically to approve plans, review budgets, and reconstitute the higher leadership body of the movement in the sector, which was singularly led by Ahmad Hallas.

There are also field challenges that the new leadership of the Fatah Movement will face, including Hamas, whose continued existence is demanded by Israeli, American, and even some Arab and regional states. Additionally, how to deal with the reformist current in Fatah (Dahlans group), as well as the issue of those expelled from the movement, the 2005 disengagement file, and the living needs of the members of Fatah and their families, as the members of the current and Hamas receive assistance from their organizations, while the members of the Fatah movement are denied such aid, etc.
