Can Arabs Confront the Project of “Greater Israel”?
What I am about to recount regarding what the head of the occupying government, Benjamin Netanyahu, announced about what he called "Greater Israel" might be a figment of imagination. It is a Talmudic dream that this obsessed individual inherited from his father, who was one of the aides to the leader of the Zionist movement, and one of its most prominent thinkers, the Ukrainian-born Vladimir Jabotinsky, whom Netanyahu considers his role model to the extent that he still keeps his sword.
From this, we can understand Netanyahu's rigidity in his policies towards the Palestinians in particular and the Arabs in general. He believes that the Arabs must submit by force – the policy of the iron wall – which Jabotinsky had launched in the 1920s. This policy has been the main inspiration for Netanyahu throughout his ruling career over the past two decades, regarding what Greater Israel wishes to achieve!!
It is true that this Zionist dream has haunted all the rulers of the occupying state and lies at the heart of the strategic thinking of Zionism since before the establishment of the Hebrew state in 1948, but this is the first time it has been disclosed openly, explicitly, and accurately. All the state’s apparatuses have publicly and secretly worked to entrench it as a reality imposed on the Arabs, with no option but acceptance or disappearance. Netanyahu exploited the battle of October 7, 2023, and used his power excessively to the extent of committing war crimes akin to those committed against Jews during the Nazi and fascist eras. He aimed to pass his Zionist dreams and work on controlling and enhancing settlement in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, while using terror and intimidation against unarmed civilians to forcefully and voluntarily displace them, thus appointing himself as a king over Israel!!
This arrogance and Israeli hubris, bolstered by unconditional American support, accompanied by European embarrassment regarding how to respond to assaults on false beliefs related to human rights upheld by European societies, and the unprecedented Arab capitulation raises extremely important questions: Regardless of the timing, means, and mechanisms that Netanyahu and his far-right government will use to pass his dreams, how will the Arabs, who share several commonalities including language, religion, race, customs, and traditions, deal with the threat to their national security and their entities threatened with disappearance or fragmentation and the dangers surrounding them from every side? Will these threats not act as a motivator and impetus for them to awaken and utilize political, moral, and practical weapons to defend their homelands and their peoples? Do the Palestinians not deserve, once the Zionist ambitions have been laid bare to the public, the necessary support to enhance their steadfastness and resistance to the occupation since they are the first line of defense for the Arab nation and the barrier against Zionist expansion?
Following Netanyahu's declaration of "Greater Israel," the concerned countries, led by Jordan and Egypt followed by various Islamic countries, hastened to announce their condemnation, denunciation, and rejection. As if such statements would alter a deep-rooted thought with a government that is merely an extension of a long-standing strategic mindset, a state that sees itself above the law, and a people that views itself as God’s chosen people and is gradually leaning towards extremism amidst a paralyzing state afflicting the Arab nation from its ocean to its gulf!! But are these statements sufficient to protect Arab entities from the dangers that are tightening around them?
Returning to the beginning, what I desire, and what every Arab person likely desires, is Arab unity. It may seem like a figment of imagination or a dream, but it is not impossible if the Arabs awaken, both in word and deed, to the conspiracies being plotted against them, their resources, their entities, and their thrones!!
Unity is a political, economic, and social shield, along with development and prosperity. Unity strengthens security, stability, and identity, and through it, challenges and dangers can be confronted. It is to the Arabs’ credit that they consider unity carefully. Unity is a deterrent for every aggressor, and through it, robbed rights can be restored. Anyone who returns to history finds that the leader Saladin al-Ayyubi, before liberating Jerusalem, fought Arabs and Muslims to unify them more than he fought the Crusaders and the aggressors. Why not draw lessons from the experience of the liberator of Jerusalem and repeat the experience in line with the current circumstances? It does not necessarily have to be all at once; it may start with steps, perhaps in the form of various forms of common integrations, starting with economic integrations and joint alliances, and lifting imposed restrictions between Arab countries for investment and freedom of movement, to benefit everyone, and perhaps in the future lead to a form of integration!!
The Arabs have sufficient capabilities, strength, and powerful cards to impose their existence, and they can take several steps – if there is serious will – that could deter the cancerous occupying state and its allies. Over time, this cancerous growth can be eradicated or, at the very least, its spread can be limited. Among these steps are:
1. Threatening to cut all trade dealings, followed by security coordination with the Israeli side.
2. Threatening to cancel all peace treaties with the occupying state and giving it a period not exceeding two years to fulfill its commitments related to the Palestinian cause and Arab issues, especially the resolutions of international legitimacy.
3. Providing sufficient support for the Palestinian people, who are currently facing the plans of the occupation alone, to enhance their steadfastness by activating the financial safety net.
4. Stirring local public opinion and urging the masses to take to the streets to express condemnation of the Israeli practices against their Palestinian brothers and rejecting Zionist expansion at the expense of Palestinian and Arab rights.
5. Addressing international public opinion and exposing the occupying state in front of the international community and embarrassing it by uncovering the crimes committed against the Palestinian people that violate all international norms and laws.
6. The dangers threatening the Arab nation have become closer, and the noose is tightening around Arab necks. Why don’t Arab countries agree to activate the Arab joint defense treaty and start conducting tactical maneuvers among themselves, sending a clear message that any attack or even thought of attacking any Arab country will have severe consequences? The recent Jordanian step of reinstating mandatory military service is a step in the right direction that falls within the preparations to confront Zionist dreams.
In conclusion, the project of "Greater Israel" declared by Netanyahu is, in essence, a declaration of war against the entire Arab nation. If there are no effective deterrent steps preceding it, as I previously outlined, a genuine and serious will, then we will see a blue Zionist area controlling the entire region and subjugating the Arab nation as slaves and servants to its interests. So awaken, O Arabs, before it is too late, and bear your responsibilities towards your homelands and peoples!!
