Greece: Arrest of Palestinian on suspicion of "belonging to Hamas and planning a 'terrorist' act"

SadaNews - The Greek police arrested a Palestinian suspected of planning to carry out "terrorist acts" on behalf of Hamas, according to a police statement late Saturday night.

Media outlets reported that the 37-year-old man was arrested yesterday, Saturday, on the island of Crete where he was working as an electrician in a hotel.

The police stated in a statement, "Based on the information available so far, he has connections with individuals recently arrested in Cyprus on terrorism-related charges," providing information about him "receiving training" from Hamas. They added in another statement released today, Sunday, that the man "requested explosives online."

Greek media reported that the man may have been targeting an Israeli cruise ship expected to arrive in Crete on Tuesday.

The official Greek television stated that the man had rented an apartment in central Athens, where the police found laboratory equipment and chemicals that could be used to make a bomb.

Furthermore, the Greek news agency "ANA" reported that the suspect received training in Malaysia, alongside one of the suspects arrested in Cyprus last May.

It added that he is expected to appear in court in Athens tomorrow, Monday, while the police confirmed that investigations are still ongoing.
