Raging Fires and a Hurricane.. Simultaneous Disasters Displace Hundreds of Thousands Across 4 Continents
SadaNews - Many regions around the world are witnessing simultaneous natural disasters affecting countries on four continents, leading to the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people in Spain, southern France, Algeria, Morocco, China, and the United States.
In Spain, authorities declared a state of emergency on Saturday due to uncontrolled wildfires, primarily affecting the western region of Madrid, which is facing what is described as the "worst" fire in its history, in addition to other fires sweeping through the Valencia region in the east of the country.
A fatality was recorded Saturday night due to the fires in the town of Manises within the affected Valencia area, and authorities were forced to evacuate over 70,000 people in the center of the country amid panic.
Authorities are still trying to control three fires that broke out on the outskirts of Madrid, two of which have merged, while a third fire coming from Avila province threatens to join them.
France.. Unprecedented Fires
In France, estimates indicate that about 300,000 people have been evacuated due to raging wildfires in the south-western part of the country, specifically in the Gironde and Landes provinces near Bordeaux, described as "unprecedented".
Media reported that firefighting teams in Gironde stated that the fire has regained its ferocity, forming a phenomenon known as "fire clouds", a situation where "the fire generates its own winds accompanied by whirlwinds, becoming erratic and uncontrollable".
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez warned that extinguishing the fire will take a long time, and authorities have opened centers to shelter those displaced from their homes, which quickly became overcrowded, while reports indicate that the fires have consumed about 98,000 hectares of land across the country since the beginning of this year.
Morocco.. Controlling Fires in the North and Center of the Country
In Morocco, authorities managed to extinguish forest fires that broke out in the northern province of Tetouan and the central region of Taroudant, with no casualties reported.
Algeria.. Control of 141 Fires
In Algeria, authorities also announced they have managed to control the majority of the wildfires that recently swept the country, with 141 out of 159 fires in the country's forests having been extinguished in recent days.
A statement from the General Directorate of Civil Protection in Algeria indicated that the fires were primarily concentrated in the eastern and northeastern parts of Algeria. They initially broke out last Tuesday in the forests of the "Seraidi" region in the Annaba province, before spreading rapidly to more than 10 other provinces.
Fatalities in Fires in the USA
In the United States, the U.S. Forest Service announced Saturday that the death toll among firefighters has risen to 4.
The victims died while participating in efforts to extinguish wildfires that broke out in late June near the border between Colorado and Utah.
Details of the incident reveal that three firefighters perished at the fire site after seeking refuge in emergency shelters resembling tents in an attempt to escape the flames, in addition to two others who were injured, one of whom was later announced dead from their injuries.
China.. Hurricane and Displacement
Meanwhile, Hurricane Nol made landfall in southern China on Sunday, accompanied by heavy rains and strong winds that swept through Guangdong Province and the neighboring city of Hong Kong.
According to authorities, the hurricane has forced more than 340,000 people to evacuate in Guangdong Province. The adverse weather conditions also led to the cancellation of flights at Hong Kong International Airport, while officials announced that flight operations would gradually resume after 6 PM today, Sunday.
The Hong Kong Observatory reported that the hurricane began to lose strength as it moved further inland; however, strong winds continued to affect large areas of the city.
