Notion Transforms from App Company to AI Agent Platform
SadaNews - Notion, a company specializing in productivity and note-taking applications, has announced the launch of a new development platform that relies on AI agents, in a move aimed at transforming its workspace into a comprehensive center for managing automated tasks and connecting data across various applications and services.
During a live broadcast event, the company unveiled significant updates to its platform, allowing developers and teams to build intelligent multi-step workflows, connect AI agents to external data and various databases, in addition to supporting the execution of custom code within a secure cloud environment.
With this step, Notion aims to go beyond being just a note-taking app equipped with AI features, evolving into a central coordination platform that enables humans and AI agents to work together across multiple tools and databases.
The company had launched the "Custom Agents" feature last February, which includes AI tools capable of performing repetitive tasks such as answering frequently asked questions, compiling project updates, and automating workflows.
According to the company, users have since been able to create over a million intelligent agents.
However, these agents had some limitations, most notably the inability to connect to external data or execute custom programming logic, prompting some companies to rely on external automation platforms or develop their own solutions.
Evan Chao, co-founder and CEO of Notion, stated that the company had not previously been sufficiently oriented toward developers, but that is changing now.
One of the key new additions is the "Workers" feature, which is a cloud environment that allows clients to run their code within an isolated and secure environment, enabling data synchronization with Notion, the creation of custom tools, and the automatic execution of tasks via Webhook notifications without the need for external infrastructure.
The company noted that the coding itself can be assisted by AI agents specialized in programming.
Notion also announced support for synchronizing external databases via APIs, allowing data to be pulled from services such as Salesforce, Zendesk, and Postgres databases, keeping it updated within Notion's databases.
Chao emphasized that these capabilities make Notion's database a central hub for running workflows and AI agents simultaneously.
As an additional step towards integration, the new platform will allow users to interact directly with external AI agents, assigning them tasks and tracking their progress as if they were part of Notion's internal system.
At launch, the platform supports agents such as Anthropic Claude Code, Cursor, OpenAI Codex, and Decagon, with plans to add more in the future.
The company is also providing a new API named External Agent API, which allows organizations to connect their internally developed AI agents specifically tailored to their needs with the Notion platform.
The company believes that the new development platform represents a significant strategic shift, as Notion gradually transforms from a traditional productivity app into a programmable platform competing with advanced business automation solutions, at a time when companies are increasingly turning to AI for automating cognitive tasks and managing data and internal tasks.
