"Apple" to Pay $250 Million to Some iPhone Users in America to Settle Lawsuit
SadaNews - Apple has agreed to pay $250 million to a group of iPhone users in the United States to settle a class-action lawsuit that accused the company of misleading consumers about the artificial intelligence capabilities in its latest devices.
According to the British "BBC" network, the settlement documents submitted to a federal court in California indicate that the company did not admit to any wrongdoing but agreed to end the legal dispute that was filed last year.
The compensation amounts range from $25 to $95 for users who purchased the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 during the period between June 2024 and March 2025.
The lawsuit accused Apple of promoting artificial intelligence features, which it referred to as "Apple Intelligence," as a revolutionary innovation, despite their actual unavailability, particularly concerning the development of the voice assistant "Siri."
In its comment on the case, an Apple spokesperson said, "The lawsuit focused on the availability of two additional features within a wide range of features that were launched," adding, "We settled this matter so we can continue to focus on what we do best; providing the most innovative products and services to our users."
For their part, the plaintiffs' attorneys asserted in an amended memorandum that the marketing campaign led by the company "amounted to misleading advertising," explaining that, "It promoted artificial intelligence capabilities that did not exist at that time, still do not exist, and will not exist for two years or more, if at all, all while marketing it as a revolutionary innovation."
They also noted that this campaign came amid a fierce technological race with major companies in the field of artificial intelligence such as "OpenAI" and "Anthropic."
The complaint also included criticisms of the company's promises to transform the voice assistant "Siri" from a limited voice interface into a fully integrated AI-powered personal assistant, stating that the new phones "reached consumers without the promised AI features, and the improved version of the voice assistant did not appear."
