Death of Former Nazareth City Council Member Samia Hakim
SadaNews - Former city council member of Nazareth, Samia Hakim "Um Mundhir" from Nazareth has passed away at the age of 86.
The Communist Party, the Nazareth Democratic Front, and the Communist Youth mourned the deceased, expressing condolences to the people of Nazareth, our Arab community, and the Palestinian people at large.
The mourning statement read: "We mourn the authentic fighter, Samia Hakim, Um Mundhir, who had been known by our community and people in the fields of struggle for decades, distinguished by her limitless giving to serve the people, and she passed away today, Tuesday, May 5, 2026, after a long life."
The funeral for the deceased will be held today, Tuesday, at 3 PM from the hall of the Greek Orthodox Church in Nazareth to the Annunciation Church, and from there to the cemetery. Condolences will be accepted in the hall of the Greek Orthodox Church on Wednesday and Thursday, from 4 PM to 9 PM.
The mourning statement also noted: "Samia Hakim was born to the late Raji Gibran in 1939 in Haifa, and in the mid-1950s, she married our comrade, the late and well-remembered, Farouk Hakim, Abu Mundhir, and they had two comrades, Dr. Mundhir Hakim and Dr. Azmi Hakim.
Comrade Samia Hakim engaged in national political activism about six decades ago by joining the ranks of the Communist Party along with her life partner, Comrade Abu Mundhir. She was always known in her community and among the people of Nazareth as being at the forefront of struggles, in demonstrations, and in political and community work, distinguished by her presence in the front lines of protests with her loud voice supporting the younger generations, whom she loved, like all her comrades. Um Mundhir excelled in every task assigned to her by our Communist Party and our Democratic Front, including her distinguished role in volunteer work camps in the city of Nazareth, under the leadership of the municipality and the front, for 16 years, turning these camps into globally recognized progressive camps. She was at the forefront, alongside her comrades, in organizing the kitchens of these camps, which prepared tens of thousands of meals in each camp."
The front further stated in the mourning message: "At the beginning of 1989, the Nazareth Front elected her to be part of their list in the municipal elections, making her the first woman to enter the city council in Nazareth. She served for three terms, totaling 15 years; as usual, she excelled in this public role and became a true representative for the people, handling every municipal matter that came her way until she found an answer or solution. She turned the hair salon she founded over the years into something akin to a reception office for the public concerning municipal issues and continued this service, even after she requested to be excused to make way for new generations. Um Mundhir never sat idle but continued her limitless giving until illness forced her to cease, as she was always present among the people, politically and socially, which is why people truly loved her. She remained and will continue to be a prominent figure in Nazareth and among our communities. Members of the Communist Party, the front, and the youth, locally and nationally, bid farewell to their beloved comrade Um Mundhir with a teardrop in their eyes and a proud smile, how could it be otherwise with her cheerful face, known for greeting the younger generations with her familiar phrases: "My dear mother, my dear!" She was the mother of all, indeed. As we see ourselves in mourning, we extend our heartfelt condolences to our comrades Dr. Mundhir and Dr. Azmi, their families, and our late comrade's brothers and sisters, affirming that her good memory will remain eternal, as it befits her to say, from rose to rose you return, our beloved Um Mundhir."
