Commemorating the 78th Anniversary of the Nakba in the 1948 Territories Amid Israeli Restrictions and Field and Digital Marches

SadaNews - Palestinians in the 1948 territories commemorate the 78th anniversary of the Nakba of the Palestinian people today, Wednesday, coinciding with Israel's commemoration of its establishment, under the slogan "Their Independence Day is Our Nakba Day," amidst measures and restrictions imposed by the Israeli authorities on public events.

The occasion witnesses the organization of marches and commemorative activities in several displaced villages, along with widespread calls for popular participation, while the central unity march, traditionally organized by the Association for the Defense of the Rights of Displaced Persons since 1998, was thwarted; it was scheduled to be held this year in the displaced village of Dammun.

According to the announced program, Nakba commemorative events are organized in several displaced sites, in the villages of Dammun, Al-Kuwikate, Umm Al-Zinat, Ma'alul, Miskah, and the lands of Al-Ruhah at 10:00 AM, followed by marches in Saffuriya, Al-Birwa, Yaquq, and Al-Qudayria at 11:00 AM, then in Lubiya at 11:30 AM, Miyar around noon, and finally in Kafr Bir'im in the afternoon.

In contrast, the Association for the Defense of the Rights of Displaced Persons announced the organization of this year's "Return March" in a digital format via social media platforms at 6:00 PM, following the decision to suspend the field march due to what it described as severe restrictions and systematic obstacles.

The association clarified, in a statement, that the decision came after months of preparations, amid requirements that limited the number of participants and linked permits to impossible conditions, stressing that suspending the field march does not undermine the historical right of return.

It emphasized that the Nakba remains a living event in the Palestinian collective awareness, calling on the masses inside and in exile to widely participate in the digital event, which will include representative speeches from various bodies and popular committees, alongside artistic segments that reflect the Palestinian narrative.
