Court Extends Detention of Activist Tamer Khalifa for Four More Days
SadaNews - The Magistrate Court in Haifa extended the detention of activist Tamer Khalifa from Umm al-Fahm for four additional days on Thursday, marking the third extension since his arrest on March 2.
The prosecution had requested to extend his detention for an additional ten days; however, the judge rejected this request and decided to extend it for only four days for further investigation.
Several supporters of Khalifa from Umm al-Fahm and other areas were present in the court.
Khalifa is undergoing continuous investigations at Gilboa Prison, under conditions that his lawyers have described as difficult.
Lawyer Ahmad Khalifa, who represents the detainee, stated: "As the days pass, it becomes clearer that this case will not yield tangible results. The investigating unit initially requested to extend the detention for 15 days, but following the court's intervention, it was extended for only seven days. In the second instance, the prosecution requested a 14-day extension, and the court extended it for four days, and today they requested 10 days, with the court again extending it for just four days. This illustrates the weakness of the prosecution’s claims.”
He added that "twelve days have passed since the arrest, and no sufficient evidence has been presented. We have known from the beginning that the case file is empty, with significant gaps in evidence, indicating that this case is a form of persecution."
He pointed out the conditions of detention that Tamer is experiencing, saying: "Since his arrest, he has been prohibited from meeting with his lawyer, and he is currently held at Gilboa Prison. It's possible that he could be transferred to another prison, which is part of interrogation methods aimed at extracting confessions."
