Are Apple Seeds Toxic? Here Are 5 Health Risks

SadaNews - Although consuming apple seeds generally does not pose a real danger to health, there can be unexpected side effects for some individuals, especially when large quantities are ingested.

While swallowing one or two seeds may not cause harm to healthy adults, there are cases that require attention, particularly for children or those with certain health issues.

Here are the five main potential risks associated with consuming apple seeds, as reported by "Verywell Health":

1. Choking and Airway Blockage

Choking is one of the most serious effects linked to apple seed consumption, especially in children. Seeds may get lodged in the throat or enter the airway, causing irritation or inflammation in the lungs. The danger for children lies in the fact that their airways are smaller, increasing the likelihood of blockage from accidentally swallowing small seeds, particularly while playing or laughing.

2. Stomach Discomfort

Some individuals may experience stomach pain or discomfort after eating apple seeds, especially those with chronic conditions like irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel diseases. Sometimes, symptoms may resolve after the seeds are expelled with stool, but in other cases, treatment may be needed to alleviate inflammation.

If you are experiencing digestive issues, it is best to consult your doctor when symptoms arise after consuming seeds or similar foods.

3. Bowel Inflammation Episodes (Diverticulitis)

If you have "diverticulitis" or diverticular disease, you may be advised to avoid seeds or small hard foods like popcorn. It was previously thought that these foods could lodge in the small sacs within the intestinal wall and cause inflammation.

However, recent studies suggest that this type of food may not necessarily trigger episodes. Nonetheless, it is always recommended to follow a fiber-rich diet and consult a doctor for appropriate dietary guidelines for the condition.

4. Allergic Reactions

In rare cases, some individuals may have an allergy to apple seeds without being allergic to the fruit itself. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may lead to anaphylaxis, a medical emergency.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching or swelling around the lips, burning or pain inside the mouth, swelling of the tongue, difficulty breathing, dizziness or rapid heartbeat, loss of consciousness, or seizures.

If any of these symptoms occur, particularly in children, immediate medical attention is advised. A specialist in allergies should also be consulted to assess the situation and provide appropriate guidance.

5. Cyanide Poisoning

Although rare, consuming very large quantities of apple seeds can lead to cyanide poisoning, one of the more serious potential risks. Apple seeds contain "amygdalin," which converts to a small amount of cyanide during digestion.

Fortunately, the amount released by eating a few seeds is not sufficient to cause real harm. According to studies, apple seeds contain between 12 and 86 nanograms of cyanide per milligram of seeds, while toxic levels start at 0.05 milligrams per deciliter of blood.

Interestingly, consuming large amounts of vitamin "C" may increase cyanide release from the seeds, enhancing the risk of poisoning.

Symptoms of cyanide poisoning include: rapid breathing, difficulty breathing, seizures or convulsions, and loss of consciousness. In severe cases, poisoning can be fatal unless treated medically promptly.
