"Jerusalem Electricity" Signs Agreement to Purchase Energy from Solar Energy Projects for Islamic Endowment Schools in Jerusalem

SadaNews Economy - The Chairman of the Board of the Jerusalem District Electricity Company, Eng. Hisham Al-Omari, signed on Thursday, 28/8/2025, an agreement to purchase electrical energy produced from solar energy projects, which include 16 schools of the Jordanian Islamic endowments in the city of Jerusalem, with a total capacity of 864 kilowatts, in accordance with the laws in effect in the holy city.

The agreement was signed in the Rouhi Al-Khatib hall at the central station in Shufat, in the presence of representatives from the project partners and supporting entities.

This project is a result of joint cooperation between the Jerusalem District Electricity Company, the Jordanian Islamic Endowments Department, and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), with support from the Norwegian representation. It aims to support the education sector in Jerusalem, enhance the sustainability of the services provided to schools and the local community, and ensure the effective use of sustainable energy sources for the benefit of the city and its institutions.

Present at the signing ceremony was His Excellency Sheikh Azam Al-Khatib, the Director General of the Islamic Endowments Department and the Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs, and Mr. Jaco Cilliers, the Special Representative of the UNDP.

Representing the Jerusalem District Electricity Company at the signing ceremony were its General Manager, Eng. Muhammad Zidan, the Director of Technical Affairs, Eng. Salah Al-Alaqim, the Director of the Technological Division, Eng. Samah, and several company officials and managers.

Board members Mr. Muhammad Hijazi Al-Rashq, Mr. Khaled Abu Akar, and Mr. Wissam Touma also attended.

In his speech at the signing ceremony, Eng. Hisham Al-Omari emphasized that this project represents an important step in supporting the education, health, and youth sectors in Jerusalem, ensuring the sustainability of services provided to these institutions and developing them for the benefit of the local community. He added that the Jerusalem District Electricity Company is proud of its role in developing pioneering projects based on sustainable energy in Jerusalem and other governorates, as part of its strategy to absorb as many renewable energy projects as possible, whether through the private sector or through partnerships and institutional initiatives.

His Excellency Sheikh Azam Al-Khatib praised the important role of the Jerusalem District Electricity Company in supporting the city of Jerusalem and its people and in its development, through the strong electricity network and the distinguished projects it implements within the city and its old town.

This project reflects the ongoing commitment of the Jerusalem District Electricity Company to work on enhancing renewable energy and contributing to building a sustainable future that serves the residents of the holy city and its institutions.
