Algerian Interior Minister Visits France to Strengthen the Normalization of Relations Between the Two Countries
SadaNews - The Algerian Minister of Interior, Said Sayoud, is visiting Paris today, Monday, for a two-day working visit, at the invitation of his French counterpart, Laurent Nunes.
This visit marks the first for a high-ranking Algerian official to France since the outbreak of the political crisis between the two countries in the summer of 2024. It comes as signs of renewed bilateral cooperation in security and judicial matters emerge, alongside French President Emmanuel Macron's desire to "relaunch a constructive dialogue that respects the national interest of each party."
Nunes is expected to welcome Sayoud at Roissy Airport, before the two engage in private discussions at the French Ministry of Interior. The talks are also expected to extend to working sessions between members of the Algerian delegation and various Interior Ministry officials in France.
French media revealed that the discussions will cover topics related to security, organized crime, as well as issues concerning immigration and public safety.
Nunes and Sayoud will meet for a dinner tonight at the conclusion of the first phase of the Algerian official's visit, which comes in response to a similar visit by his French counterpart in mid-February of this year.
French Justice Minister, Gerald Darmanin, visited Algeria in mid-May of this year, in an attempt to restore the "judicial relations" between the two countries to their normal course.
This comes after an unprecedented crisis that has dominated Algerian-French relations since Paris announced its support in July 2024 for the Moroccan plan based on autonomy under Moroccan authority for the disputed territory of Western Sahara with the Polisario Front.
