Is Coffee a Weapon Against Anxiety? Study Reveals the Ideal Dose

SadaNews - A recent study has revealed that drinking coffee in moderation, at a rate of two to three cups per day, may be associated with a lower risk of anxiety and depression compared to not drinking it or consuming it excessively.

The study was conducted by researchers at Fudan University in China, and its results were published in the scientific journal Journal of Affective Disorders.

According to the study, which relied on data from more than 460,000 individuals over approximately 13 years, people who consume coffee moderately were the least likely to develop stress-related mental health disorders.

The researchers indicated the presence of a "reverse U-shaped curve" relationship, where moderate amounts provide the best benefits, while excessive coffee consumption, particularly more than 4 to 5 cups a day, is associated with an increased risk of anxiety and mood disorders.

Scientists believe that coffee may affect the brain in several ways, including:

It contains antioxidant compounds that help reduce inflammation in the body.

It affects neurotransmitters in the brain, such as dopamine and serotonin, which play important roles in mood regulation.

It helps increase alertness and concentration, which may reduce feelings of stress.

These potential benefits are attributed to coffee compounds, including caffeine and antioxidants, which may influence brain chemistry and enhance dopamine release associated with mood improvement and reduced fatigue.

Despite the positive results, researchers emphasize that the study only observes a correlational relationship and does not prove that coffee is the direct cause of reduced anxiety or depression, stressing the importance of moderation and considering individual differences in response to caffeine.

On the other hand, cardiologists warn that consuming more than 4 cups of coffee daily may have negative effects on heart health, especially in certain individuals or under specific conditions.

Potential Harms of Excessive Consumption

When consuming large amounts of coffee or caffeine, the following effects may occur:

Heart rhythm disturbances (irregularities).

High blood pressure.

Increased risk of heart attacks.

Anxiety and tension.

Sleep problems.

Additionally, energy drinks containing high amounts of caffeine can cause serious heart problems even in healthy individuals.
