The President Discusses with the Pope of the Vatican by Phone the Latest Developments in the Palestinian Territories and the Region

SadaNews - A phone call took place today, Monday, between President Mahmoud Abbas and Pope Francis XIV, during which they discussed the latest developments in the Palestinian territories and the region.

The President thanked the Pope for his humanitarian stance calling for an end to the war in Gaza and for establishing peace based on a two-state solution, rejecting unilateral measures that undermine the chances for peace.

The President briefed the Pope on the grave situation in Jerusalem amid ongoing Israeli violations against sacred sites, notably the closure of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to worshippers, and the prohibition of prayers therein, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

He also informed the Pope about the serious situation in the West Bank due to the rising terrorism of settlers and the plans for annexation and settlement expansion, along with the continued withholding of Palestinian funds, which threatens to undermine the institutions of the State of Palestine.

The President addressed the difficult conditions in Gaza, amid the continued suffering of citizens due to the suspension of humanitarian aid and the closure of the Rafah crossing.

President Abbas also affirmed the State of Palestine's condemnation of the Iranian attacks targeting Gulf countries and the region, expressing the State of Palestine's rejection of any infringement on its sovereignty, security, stability, and the safety of its citizens. He reiterated the State of Palestine's support for the Gulf states, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and countries that are subjected to Iranian aggressions, supporting their decisions while emphasizing the importance of ending this war and returning to dialogue to achieve security and stability in the region. At the same time, the State of Palestine expresses its condemnation and deep concern over the Israeli assaults on Lebanon and the destruction of towns in the south.

The President emphasized the necessity, after the cessation of the war in the region, to hold an international conference for peace and implement the Arab Peace Initiative, leading to the end of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land and Arab territories in Lebanon and Syria, paving the way for achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the region.

For his part, the Pope confirmed the Vatican's steadfast position supporting the rights of the Palestinian people and achieving peace on their land in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, stressing the importance of continuing to provide assistance in Gaza.

The Pope also expressed his hope to stop the suffering of the Lebanese people due to the war, calling for an end to wars and achieving peace, justice, and security for all countries in the region.

The President and the Pope exchanged congratulations on the upcoming Eid al-Fitr and Easter celebrations, and they agreed to continue ongoing communication and consultation between the two sides.
