Turkish F-16 Plane Crashes in the West of the Country, Pilot Killed
SadaNews - A Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed in the west of the country on Wednesday morning, resulting in the death of its pilot, according to Anadolu Agency, citing the Turkish Ministry of Defense.
The aircraft took off at 00:56 local time (21:56 GMT) from a base in Balıkesir province, before losing contact. Its wreckage was later found in the same province. The ministry indicated that the cause of the incident is still under investigation.
Balıkesir Governor İsmail Üstaoğlu stated in a post on X platform: "One of our pilots has been martyred. I pray that God grants mercy to our martyr, and I extend my sincere condolences to his family. We ask God to inspire our people with patience and solace".
Üstaoğlu arrived at the crash site in the Nayıbali area on the international road connecting İzmir and Istanbul.
After receiving information from local officials about the incident, Üstaoğlu told Anadolu that an F-16 aircraft from the 9th Air Base Command in Balıkesir crashed shortly after takeoff.
He added: "We are currently at the crash site in the Nayıbali area on the İzmir-Istanbul highway. An F-16 aircraft crashed shortly after taking off".
It is worth mentioning that the Turkish military experienced a similar incident last November when a C-130 military cargo plane crashed in Georgia while returning from Azerbaijan, resulting in the deaths of all twenty crew members.
In recent months, there has been a series of incidents involving American-made F-16 aircraft worldwide. Last January, the black box from one of these planes was found after it crashed into the sea during a routine mission in Taiwan, and its pilot was killed after parachuting into the open sea.
In Poland, another plane crashed last August while preparing for an air show, resulting in the death of its pilot.
