Netanyahu: There is "some progress" in talks with Syria

SadaNews - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the beginning of a cabinet meeting on Sunday that communications with Syria continue and have made "some progress," but the gap remains significant.

This follows reports that the United States is pressuring Israel to concede some of its demands for a swift understanding, against the backdrop of expectations that an agreement will be announced during this week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, which will be attended by both Netanyahu and Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara.

Key details of the potential agreement

The Syrian president stated that ongoing talks could lead to results "in the coming days," emphasizing that a security agreement is necessary and must respect Syrian sovereignty, airspace, and territorial integrity, and should be under the supervision of the United Nations.

Syria hopes that the agreement will include the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the south and a halt to Israeli airstrikes within Syrian territory.

Israel insists on remaining in some strategic positions it occupied after December 8, the most notable of which is the Syrian side of Mount Hermon.

Syria, for its part, shows readiness for an agreement similar to the 1974 disengagement agreement, which created a demilitarized zone between the two countries following the 1973 war.

Despite the progress, Israeli sources indicate that the agreement is still not fully mature, with gaps between the demands and the proposals put forward by Damascus.
