Britain, Canada, and Australia Recognize the State of Palestine

SadaNews - In a coordinated international move, Canada, Australia, and Britain announced today, Sunday, their official recognition of the State of Palestine, while other countries are preparing to take the same step, marking a historic shift in the Western stance on the Palestinian issue amid the ongoing Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that his country officially recognizes the State of Palestine. He emphasized, in a post on the "X" platform, his country's readiness "to work in partnership to achieve the promise of a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel."

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong, in a joint statement, announced that Australia officially recognizes the independent and sovereign state of Palestine, joining Canada and the United Kingdom in a coordinated international effort to promote a two-state solution.

The statement stressed that the recognition comes in response to the historical aspirations of the Palestinians and represents Australia's long-term commitment to the two-state solution as the only way to achieve lasting peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.

The statement indicated that the international community has set clear requirements for the Palestinian Authority, including commitments to conduct democratic elections and substantial reforms in governance, education, and financing, while emphasizing that "there is no place for Hamas in Palestine."

It added that the next steps will include discussions on establishing diplomatic relations and opening embassies as the Palestinian Authority advances in its reform commitments. The statement also confirmed that intensive international efforts are underway to develop a peace plan that allows for the reconstruction of Gaza, builds the capabilities of the Palestinian state, and ensures Israel's security.

It pointed out that the role of Arab League countries and the United States is vital in this process. It concluded that Australia will continue to work with its international partners to bring the Middle East closer to a lasting peace that ensures security for all the peoples of the region.
