UN Security Council to Vote Today on a Resolution Calling for Ceasefire in Gaza Strip
SadaNews - The UN Security Council will vote again today, Thursday, on a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and allowing humanitarian aid to reach the besieged and devastated territory, a proposal supported by the majority of member states, despite the repeated US veto.
At the end of last August, elected members initiated discussions on the draft resolution in response to the United Nations officially declaring a famine in the Gaza Strip.
The draft resolution, which will be put to a vote later today, calls for the lifting of restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid while simultaneously demanding an "immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza," as well as the immediate and unconditional release of detainees.
UN partner experts confirmed in August that a famine is occurring in parts of the territory, while a UN committee stated that Israel is committing "genocide" in Gaza.
The United States has previously rejected similar draft resolutions that were put to a vote in the Security Council, the latest of which was in June when it used its veto power to protect its ally Israel.
The previous veto sparked anger among the other 14 members of the Security Council, who have increasingly expressed frustration over the failure to pressure Israel to end the plight of the people of Gaza.
