A Tripartite Meeting Between Jordan, Syria, and the United States Discusses Ways to Solidify the Ceasefire in Suwayda
SadaNews - Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Syria's Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shabani, and the U.S. envoy to Syria Tom Barak held a meeting in Amman on Saturday to discuss ways to strengthen the "ceasefire" in Syria; according to a statement issued by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry.
The statement indicated that the tripartite discussions "addressed the situation in Syria and efforts to solidify the ceasefire that was established early this morning around the Syrian province of Suwayda to preserve Syrian blood and ensure the safety of civilians."
It added that Safadi, al-Shabani, and Barak "agreed on operational steps aimed at supporting Syria in implementing the agreement, ensuring the security and stability of Syria, protecting civilians, and guaranteeing the sovereignty of the state and the rule of law across all Syrian territory."
According to the statement, "the operational steps included topics related to solidifying the ceasefire, deploying Syrian security forces in the province of Suwayda, releasing detainees held by all parties, efforts for community reconciliation in the province, enhancing civil peace, and delivering humanitarian aid."
During the meeting, Safadi and Barak emphasized their support for the ceasefire agreement and the Syrian government's efforts to implement it, stressing that "the Kingdom and the United States stand fully in solidarity with Syria, its security, stability, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the safety of its citizens," underscoring that "Syria's security and stability are a cornerstone for the stability of the region."
Both Safadi and Barak welcomed "the Syrian government's commitment to hold accountable all responsible for violations against Syrian citizens in the province of Suwayda and to support efforts aimed at rejecting violence and sectarianism, as well as attempts to incite strife and hatred."
Al-Shabani expressed appreciation for "the role and efforts of the Kingdom and the United States in reaching a ceasefire and efforts for its implementation, ensuring the security and stability of Syria and the safety of its citizens."
Earlier on Saturday, Safadi expressed during his meeting with the U.S. envoy to Syria his country's condemnation of the "repeated Israeli aggressions" against Syria, describing them as a "flagrant violation" of international law.
A statement from the Jordanian Foreign Ministry noted that Safadi discussed with Barak "the situation in Syria" and reiterated his "condemnation of the repeated Israeli aggressions on Syria and interference in its affairs, considering them a blatant violation of international law and a breach of Syria's sovereignty that threatens its security, stability, unity, and the safety of its citizens."
Safadi commended the "essential role played by the United States in reaching a ceasefire and ensuring the security and stability of Syria and the safety of its citizens," affirming "the continuation of partnership and cooperation with the United States in this regard."
The Syrian presidency announced a "prompt" ceasefire on Saturday, coinciding with the start of security forces' deployment in the province of Suwayda to "stop the chaos," following armed clashes that saw more than 900 fatalities within a week.
Washington had announced hours earlier an agreement between Syria and Israel on a ceasefire between them, following Israeli attacks targeting official headquarters and government troops in Damascus and Suwayda, and U.S. envoy Tom Barak's call for "Druze, Bedouins, and Sunnis to lay down their arms."
