Syria Qualifies for the U-18 Asian Basketball Cup... Is the World Cup Dream Coming Closer?
SadaNews - The Syrian U-18 basketball team has qualified for the 2026 Asian Cup, alongside the Lebanese and Iranian teams, after finishing third in the West Asian Championship with three wins and two losses.
The Road to Bronze
The Syrian team began its journey in the West Asian Championship with a surprising victory over the Jordanian team, which ranks higher in the world classification, with a score of 80-62. They continued their impressive run with a victory over the Palestinian team with a score of 99-68.
However, Syria faced the Iranian team in the third match and lost with a score of 82-61, followed by another loss against the Lebanese team with a score of 79-71, before regaining their balance with a significant victory over the Iraqi team with a score of 91-57.
The Syrian team finished its campaign in the championship in third place with 8 points, winning the bronze medal, behind the Lebanese team that won the gold medal and topped the standings with 10 points, followed by the Iranian team in second place with 9 points, winning the silver medal.
Shining Stars and Notable Performance
The championship saw the emergence of many names from the Syrian team players, amid expectations that they will have a significant presence in the future of Syrian basketball.
Perhaps the most prominent of these players were Youssef Takriti and Bilal Abu Laban, as they were the highest scorers in the five matches combined.
While these two players stood out throughout the championship, other players also shone and made an impact in specific matches, such as player Abdullah Qabani in the match against Palestine, Yahya Qasas in the match against Iran, and Tony Haddad in the match against Jordan.
2026 Asian Cup: Here’s the Qualification System
Ahmedabad, India, will host the 2026 Asian Cup for U-18 teams in about a month, from August 13 to 23.
A total of 16 teams will compete in the tournament, divided into 4 groups, with each group consisting of 4 teams. The teams that finish top of their groups will qualify for the quarter-finals, while the teams at the bottom will exit the tournament.
The remaining 8 teams that finish in second and third place in their groups will compete against each other to qualify 4 of them for the quarter-finals alongside the group leaders.
The Road to the 2027 World Cup
The competition at the 2026 Asian Cup will not only be for the championship but also for the qualifying spots for the 2027 U-19 World Cup, where the four teams that qualify for the semi-finals will secure their places in the global tournament.
The World Cup will take place in Europe, specifically in Pardubice, Czech Republic, between June 26 and July 4, 2027.
