Egypt Aims to Host Africa Cup of Nations 2028 Following Achievements in World Cup 2026

SadaNews - Hamada Al-Sharbeni, a member of the Egyptian Football Association Board, confirmed that they are studying the possibility of formally applying to host the Africa Cup of Nations to be held in 2028.

In statements to the Egyptian radio station "Mega FM," Hamada Al-Sharbeni said: "We are seriously considering organizing the Africa Cup of Nations 2028. We are studying the matter thoroughly with the relevant authorities and the political leadership, which is keen to provide all means to ensure the success of sports."

He added: "Egypt is capable of hosting any tournament, whether the Africa Cup of Nations or even the World Cup and the World Cup for futsal, but the file for organizing the Africa Cup of Nations 2028 is our top priority at the moment."

He explained: "During our meeting at the Football Association, we were keen to discuss the possibility of organizing the Africa Cup of Nations 2028, and we are capable and have the excellent infrastructure to host the tournament."

It is noteworthy that Egypt has hosted the Africa Cup of Nations five times previously in 1959, 1974, 1986, 2006, and 2019, with the Egyptian national team being the most crowned team in the tournament's history, having won the title seven times.

Last Tuesday, the Egyptian national team bid farewell to the 2026 World Cup following a dramatic loss to Argentina with a score of (2-3) in the Round of 16, marking Egypt's first appearance in the knockout stages in its World Cup history.

Following the impressive performance of the Pharaohs in the World Cup, Hani Abou Reida, president of the Egyptian Football Association, announced the board's approval to renew the contract with Hossam Hassan, the head coach of the national team, and Ibrahim Hassan, the team manager.

The Egyptian Football Association indicated that this step comes as part of the council's commitment to continue the national team's technical project and to build on the historic achievements of Egyptian football in the past period.

Hossam Hassan has been leading the Egyptian national team since early February 2024, guiding his country to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 and the 2026 World Cup unbeaten.

In the last Africa Cup, held in Morocco, the Egyptian team finished fourth after losing on penalties to Nigeria in the match to determine the winner of the bronze medal.
