Why Does Spain’s Star Carry the Name "Lamine Jamal"? The Touching Story Behind the Name
SadaNews - Millions of people around the world will watch Lamine Jamal lead Spain against France in the World Cup semi-finals, but among them may be two individuals who played a significant role at the start of his life, even if their story remains largely unknown.
Like most Spaniards, the Barcelona star, who celebrated his nineteenth birthday on Monday, carries two family names; the first from his father Nasraoui, and the second from his mother Ibana.
However, like many Spanish football players, including his former Barcelona coach Xavi and teammate Pedri, he only uses his first name on the field.
In Lamine Jamal's case, his first name consists of two parts; "Lamine Jamal," just like Spanish coach Luis Enrique, whose first name also consists of two words.
That's why his jersey with Barcelona and the Spanish national team displays the name "Lamine Jamal," while his passport and national ID carry the full name: Lamine Jamal Nasraoui Ibana.
The Meaning of "Lamine" and "Jamal"
The name Lamine is one of the common Arabic names, meaning trustworthy or reliable, and it is derived from the title "Al-Amin," which the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was known by.
As for Jamal, it is one of the most widely used Arabic names, meaning beauty or elegance, qualities that many feel apply to the player’s style on the field.
His father, Munir Nasraoui, is of Moroccan descent, while his mother, Sheila Ibana, was born in Equatorial Guinea, making the choice of these two names not unusual for an immigrant family in Catalonia in 2007.
An Unexpected Story Behind the Name
However, the real story behind the name is more personal. According to Spanish media, his parents did not choose the names for religious or familial reasons, but rather in honor of two individuals who helped them at the beginning of their lives.
Sheila Ibana was only 16 years old when she gave birth to her first child, and the couple faced financial difficulties, prompting some close friends to support them.
According to the Spanish newspaper "AS," at a time when Jamal's parents couldn’t afford the rent for their home, two men named Lamine and Jamal helped them secure accommodation.
As a gesture of gratitude, Munir named his child after them both, which explains the compound name of the shining Barcelona star.
From a Poor Neighborhood to Global Fame
Since then, the life of the child carrying those names has changed remarkably.
He left his home in the coastal city of Mataró at the age of twelve to join Barcelona's famous La Masia academy, went on to win the Spanish league with the club, and the Euro 2024 with the Spanish national team.
He also signed a new contract with Barcelona in 2025 valued at 40 million euros annually before taxes, in addition to sponsorship deals with global brands such as Adidas, Visa, Coca-Cola, Beats, and American Eagle.
Despite his fame and wealth, he has not forgotten his difficult beginnings.
He said in a radio interview in early July: "My mother gave birth to me when she was sixteen. My father worked collecting things from the streets to provide us with food. For me, that's the real pressure, not what I'm experiencing now in football."
He still celebrates his goals with the gesture 304, referring to the last three digits of the postal code of the poor Rocafonda neighborhood where he grew up, in pride of his roots.
A Mystery That Remains
Despite the widespread story, the identity of the two men bearing the names Lamine and Jamal remains unknown.
The player himself has not confirmed the details, nor have his parents revealed the nature of their relationship or the type of assistance they provided, and neither has appeared publicly to this day.
The reason remains unknown; perhaps they preferred to stay out of the spotlight, or did not want their story to overshadow the player’s career.
But if they are watching the World Cup semi-finals, they can surely feel proud, as the name they gave to a child 19 years ago has turned into one of the most famous names in world football.
