Disheartening Leak About iPhone 18 Pro Battery Specifications
SadaNews - A new leak about the battery of the iPhone 18 Pro raises questions about Apple's strategy in developing battery life, especially amidst fierce competition from Chinese companies that now offer phones with batteries exceeding 7000 mAh.
According to recent leaks, the American market version of the iPhone 18 Pro will come with a battery capacity of 4288 mAh, a very slight increase of only 36 mAh compared to the previous generation.
As for the version designated for the Chinese market, which still includes a traditional SIM card slot, it is expected to have a battery capacity of 4056 mAh, an increase of 68 mAh compared to the iPhone 17 Pro, according to a report published by "phonearena" that was reviewed by "Al Arabiya Business".
Limited Increase Despite Focus on the Pro Category
These figures come at a time when reports indicate that Apple may focus this year on professional phones only, launching "Pro" models alongside a brand new phone named "Ultra," while the release of the basic version of the iPhone 18 may be postponed to next year.
With this focus on the high-end category, many users expected significant improvements in various aspects, especially in battery life, but the leaked numbers do not suggest a real leap in this area.
Apple Bets on Efficiency Rather Than Capacity
The phone is expected to rely on the new A20 Pro processor, manufactured using a 2nm process by TSMC, along with Apple's internally developed C2 modem.
The company often relies on improving energy consumption efficiency through the processor, operating system, and modem instead of significantly increasing battery size, a strategy that has helped iPhones maintain strong performance in terms of battery life despite having smaller capacities compared to competitors.
Competition Expands
However, critics of Apple's policy believe that this approach is no longer sufficient in the current smartphone market.
While most iPhones still range between 4000 and 4500 mAh, batteries exceeding 6000 and 7000 mAh have become common in many Chinese phones.
Companies like "OnePlus" and "Honor" offer phones equipped with huge batteries, with some recent models reaching capacities exceeding 10000 mAh.
Where Are the Silicon and Carbon Batteries?
Observers note that one reason for the competitors' superiority is their reliance on silicon and carbon batteries, a technology that provides higher energy density than the conventional lithium-ion batteries currently used in iPhones.
This technology allows for increasing battery capacity without the need to enlarge its physical size or increase the thickness of the phone, giving companies greater flexibility in designing their devices.
Despite this technology no longer being new, as it has been used in several smartphones over the past years, Apple has yet to officially adopt it.
Will the Equation Change in 2027?
Recent reports indicate that Apple is indeed working on developing batteries based on silicon and carbon technology, which could pave the way for a marked increase in battery capacities in iPhones in the coming years.
However, the company's history of adopting new technologies suggests that it tends to move cautiously, so significant leaps are not expected immediately upon adopting the new technology.
Some analysts believe that Apple may target batteries with a capacity approaching 6000 mAh in future generations, a figure that will still remain below some competitors but could be sufficient to achieve exceptional battery life when combined with Apple's highly efficient processors and enhancements to the iOS system.
Despite the criticisms directed at the battery capacity, the latest generations of iPhones have proven that software efficiency remains one of the company's strongest points.
However, the continuing significant gap in numbers between Apple and its competitors may drive more users to demand a change in approach in the coming years.
