20 Missing Due to Volcano Eruption in East Indonesia

SadaNews - 20 people, including nine from Singapore, went missing on Friday following the eruption of Mount Dukono on Halmahera Island in East Indonesia, according to a rescue team official who spoke to "Agence France-Presse," resulting in a plume of smoke rising to about ten kilometers in the air.

The official, Iwan Ramdani, stated: "Our team is on its way to the site, and it has not yet been confirmed whether there are any injuries," adding: "According to reports, about 20 people are being searched for."

Indonesia, a Southeast Asian nation, has several active volcanoes. Below are volcanic eruptions that have occurred in the country since last year.

On November 19, 2025, Mount Semeru in Indonesia, the tallest and most volatile volcano in the country, erupted, sending a column of ash over East Java, and released fast-moving volcanic lava that swept several kilometers down the slopes of the mountain.

In early August 2025, the Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano on the Indonesian island of Flores erupted, sending a dense column of ash that reached an altitude of 18 kilometers into the sky. The same volcano had erupted on July 7 of the same year. On November 4, 2024, an eruption of this volcano resulted in the deaths of 10 people.
