The Embassy of Palestine in Bosnia and Herzegovina Commemorates Palestinian Prisoners' Day
SadaNews - The Embassy of the State of Palestine in the Bosnian capital Sarajevo hosted a cultural seminar and an art exhibition to commemorate Palestinian Prisoners' Day, attended by high-level diplomatic and political figures, reflecting the extent of international solidarity with the justice of the Palestinian cause.
The event was opened by the Ambassador of Palestine to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Silviya Abu Luban, who stated that the issue of prisoners represents the essence of the Palestinian national sentiment, emphasizing its humanitarian and legal dimensions based on international humanitarian law principles.
She explained that the continuation of systematic detention policies, accompanied by severe violations of international standards, constitutes an assault on the entire Palestinian people and a blatant challenge to the international justice system, which necessitates a shift from mere condemnation by the international community to effective action.
In her address, the ambassador dedicated a special section to the "stolen childhood" issue, warning of targeting Palestinian children inside detention facilities, and stressing the need to activate relevant international agreements to ensure their protection from practices that undermine their human dignity and their inherent rights to life and freedom.
In both political and legal contexts, the seminar discussed serious developments related to the recent Israeli legislative trends, particularly efforts to legalize the execution of prisoners and intensify arbitrary sentences, alongside the escalation of administrative detention policies, accompanied by documented reports of torture and mistreatment, as violations that necessitate urgent international legal accountability.
The event witnessed extensive diplomatic attendance, led by ambassadors and representatives from countries including Qatar, Algeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Switzerland, Brazil, as well as the Consul General of the United Arab Emirates, the President of the Palestinian community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Majid Ma'arouf, the diplomatic attaché from Kuwait, and representatives from the missions of Slovenia, China, and Russia, in addition to a representative from the International Committee of the Red Cross.
A number of Bosnian officials also attended, including the Deputy Minister of Human Rights and Refugees, the Deputy Mayor of Sarajevo, mayors, and political and military figures, affirming the depth of bilateral relations and the Bosnian solidarity with just humanitarian causes.
At the conclusion of the event, attendees toured an exhibition titled: "Behind Bars: A Human Seeking Peace," which presented a visual plea and live testimonies documenting the suffering of more than ten thousand prisoners, including hundreds of children, placing the global conscience before its moral and legal responsibilities.
The event concluded by affirming the right of prisoners to freedom and the necessity of applying the provisions of international humanitarian law, aiming to end this suffering and achieve justice. Ambassador Abu Luban also held consultations to launch a Bosnian campaign in support of Palestinian prisoners, which will be officially announced later. It is worth noting that the exhibition is open to the public throughout the week at the embassy's headquarters.
