4 Steps to Protect Yourself or Others from Online Abuse
SadaNews - Anyone can fall victim to online abuse. It only takes a few clicks and an AI program, and suddenly the world can see explicit images designed for anyone.
With the ease of deepfake technology - which creates misleadingly realistic images, videos, and altered audio through AI - and experts predicting continuous improvements in this software, it is crucial to understand that online abuse is real and poses real threats.
Some experts believe online abuse has become more common compared to physical abuse in social contexts, meaning it’s time for everyone - from users and social media platforms to authorities - to take it seriously.
What is Cyber Violence?
Cyber violence is any form of violence that occurs through digital means, ranging from social media platforms to email, messaging apps, and dating sites.
It's important to recognize that even if this violence occurs online, it does not diminish its realness.
Common forms of cyber violence include cyberstalking - for example, consistently monitoring someone’s movements through digital means, stalking on social media, or unwanted communication - and cyber harassment, which involves someone systematically insulting, threatening, or intimidating another person online.
Sharing explicit material, known commonly as "revenge porn," is another prevalent form of online abuse, involving the distribution of explicit images of someone, often a woman, without their consent.
Deepfake sexually explicit videos of someone are a similar form of cyber violence.
Other ways to harm someone online include sharing their sensitive personal data without consent, such as their address, phone number, or workplace, known as "doxxing." Additionally, creating a fake account for someone is another form of cyber abuse.
The Ministry of Education and Family Affairs in Germany states that digital violence is not a personal issue or a simple crime; it has severe consequences, including serious psychological effects, such as anxiety, social isolation, and sleep disorders.
Therefore, it is crucial to speak out bravely when noticing someone being targeted online, and victims should seek help if they can.
Where Can You Get Help?
There have long been advisory centers for victims of abuse in many countries. These centers provide experts available around the clock to offer confidential, free consultations, whether in-person, by phone, or online.
Many organizations also provide legal support and accompany the affected person to the police station when they wish to file a criminal complaint.
The question is, what steps should be taken when one is a victim of online abuse?
If someone suspects they are experiencing online violence, there are a few steps they can take:
First: Document Evidence
A screenshot should be taken immediately of all abusive content as this helps document evidence, even if the perpetrator later deletes the images. Ensure that the date and time of posting, username, and web link, if possible, are visible.
Second: Report
Most social media platforms (like Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp) have a reporting feature that allows users to report abusive content and request its removal. However, it is essential to save the report of the complaint, such as by taking a screenshot.
Third: Protect Sensitive Content
The free "StopNCII" tool can create a type of digital fingerprint for sensitive images or videos stored on the user’s device, helping prevent their sharing without consent. Platforms currently participating and listed on "StopNCII" include Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, X, and others.
Fourth: File a Complaint
Although filing a complaint with the police may not be easy, it should always be advised. It is recommended to ask someone to accompany for psychological support. In many countries, it is also possible to file a complaint online.
