The 25th Amendment or Impeachment.. Rising Demands for Trump's Ouster Over Iran
SadaNews - Voices of Democrats in Congress, along with a number of prominent political commentators, are growing louder in their calls for the impeachment of U.S. President Donald Trump. This comes in light of several stances and decisions, culminating when he escalated his rhetoric against Iran and warned yesterday, Tuesday, that "a whole civilization will die tonight," before a temporary agreement was reached with Iran to halt the war.
Several U.S. and British outlets, including Axios, The Hill, and The Guardian, have noted that several U.S. House members and some of Trump's former allies are openly considering invoking the 25th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution to remove President Trump.
The level of discontent among Democrats reached a peak following Trump’s warning on "Easter Sunday," where he addressed Iranian officials using derogatory language: "Open the damned Strait, you crazy bastards, or you will live in hell."
President Trump followed that warning yesterday, Tuesday, by threatening to target Iran's civilian infrastructure, including bridges and power stations, a step that legal experts warn constitutes a war crime.
According to The Hill, President Trump’s explicit threat to "destroy an entire civilization" angered several Democrats, as Congresswoman Diana DeGette (Democrat from Colorado) stated on platform X that "the process for the 25th Amendment should begin immediately, and if the government is too cowardly, then the House should start the impeachment process now."
Growing Calls for Impeachment
The number of legislators calling for Trump’s impeachment has reached historical levels, with more than 50 Democratic representatives and prominent senators demanding Trump’s ouster by yesterday afternoon.
Axios reported Congresswoman Yasmin Ansari (Democrat from Arizona), the first woman of Iranian descent in Congress, stating that "the 25th Amendment was created for a reason; the government must use it. The fate of U.S. troops, the Iranian people, and the very foundations of our global order are at stake."
Meanwhile, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Somali descent (Democrat from Minnesota) described the president as a "crazy psychopath," while Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (Democrat from Michigan) accused the "war criminal in the White House" of threatening a people with genocide.
In a surprising turn, calls for impeachment no longer resonate solely within the left; The Guardian highlighted the defection of Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, a former strong ally of Trump, who wrote: "The 25th Amendment now!!! Not a single bomb has fallen on America. We cannot kill an entire civilization. This is evil and madness."
Greene, who previously warned that Trump has "lost his mind," joined other figures from the "America First" movement, like Alex Jones and Tucker Carlson, in viewing the escalation with Iran as a betrayal of Trump’s campaign promise to end "endless wars."
The 25th Amendment or Impeachment
The debate regarding Trump’s impeachment focuses on two constitutional mechanisms: the 25th Amendment, which allows the Vice President and a majority of cabinet members to declare that the President is "unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office."
The second mechanism concerns impeachment, a process led by the House of Representatives requiring a simple majority to impeach and a two-thirds majority in the Senate for conviction and removal.
Axios dismissed the success of either process without support from Republican members of Congress or a revolt within the administration, while The Guardian noted that the chances of an administration loyal enough to appoint J.D. Vance as Vice President in place of Trump are "virtually nonexistent."
Questions about Mental Capacity
The current crisis has revived a debate that emerged during Joe Biden’s presidency (2021-2025) concerning the mental capacities of the nation's president, with The Guardian quoting political commentators calling for increased oversight of Trump (79 years old).
In contrast, the White House challenged those demands, with spokesperson Davis Engel describing calls for Trump's impeachment as "pathetic," stating to Axios: "Democrats in Congress are crazy, weak, and ineffective, which is why their approval ratings have reached historically low levels."
