Guterres Welcomes Ceasefire Between Iran and the United States
SadaNews - The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran, calling on all parties to adhere to international law and uphold the truce.
United Nations Secretary-General spokesman, Stefan Dujarric, said in a statement: "The Secretary-General welcomes the United States and Iran's announcement of a two-week ceasefire. He calls on all parties to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East to fulfill their obligations under international law and comply with the ceasefire to pave the way for a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region."
The statement also emphasized the necessity of the ceasefire to protect civilians. Guterres expressed gratitude to Pakistan and other mediators for their assistance in establishing the ceasefire.
U.S. President Donald Trump agreed on Tuesday to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, just under two hours before the deadline he set for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face widespread attacks on its civilian infrastructure.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated in a statement that Tehran will halt retaliatory attacks and allow safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian Supreme National Security Council described the agreement as a victory over the United States, adding that Trump accepted Tehran's conditions to end the hostilities.
