Trump Warns Iran 48 Hours to Open the Strait of Hormuz and Threatens to Target Infrastructure
SadaNews - US President Donald Trump escalated his threats against Iran, announcing a 48-hour deadline for it to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international navigation, warning of direct targeting of energy infrastructure in case of non-compliance.
In a post on the "Truth Social" platform, Trump used an unprecedented tone of escalation: "If Iran does not fully open the Strait of Hormuz, without threat, within 48 hours from this moment, the United States will strike and destroy its various power stations, starting with the largest."
This development comes amid escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of global oil supplies pass, amidst actual disruption of navigation and a sharp rise in geopolitical risks. It coincides with ongoing US and Israeli military operations aimed at reducing Iran's naval and missile capabilities in the region.
Despite the harshness of the statement, details of the potential US response remain unclear, especially regarding the scope and timing of the strikes.
Targeting power stations, if carried out, could lead to far-reaching consequences beyond the military dimension, including partial paralysis of civilian and economic infrastructure within Iran, raising the likelihood of regional escalation.
The unified command of the Iranian armed forces stated it would target what it called "all American energy infrastructure" in the region if Iran's power stations were attacked.
The Tasnim News Agency reported on the spokesperson for the "Khatam al-Anbia" military headquarters: "If the enemy violates the fuel and energy infrastructure in Iran, all energy infrastructure, IT, and desalination technology belonging to the United States and Israel in the region will be targeted."
