Earthquakes Shake Italian Islands in the Mediterranean
SadaNews - Several earthquakes shook Italian islands in the Mediterranean early this morning (Saturday).
No immediate reports of casualties or property damage have been received. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology stated that an earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale occurred at 02:46 AM (01:46 GMT) at a depth of 29 kilometers near the Aeolian Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the northern coast of Sicily. A 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck a nearby area three minutes later.
The U.S. Geological Survey estimated the stronger earthquake at 5.2 magnitude and at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The Italian news agency ANSA reported that the 4.3 magnitude earthquake was felt by residents of Palermo in Sicily, as well as in the Reggio Calabria area on the Italian mainland.
Several aftershocks of lesser magnitude occurred afterwards.
