In a Message to the United Nations, Iran Describes Trump's Statements as Dangerous and Threatens a Firm Response
SadaNews - Iran has issued an important message to the United Nations and the United Nations Security Council regarding the ongoing threat of the use of force by the United States against the Islamic Republic.
The message from the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations states: "Based on instructions from my government and referring to our previous messages dated December 30, 2025, and January 2, 9, 13, 22, and 28, 2026, regarding the ongoing threat of the use of force by the United States against the Islamic Republic of Iran, I write to draw your urgent attention and the attention of the Security Council members to the continuous threats by U.S. officials to resort to the use of force, including the recent public statement by the U.S. President regarding the use of Diego Garcia in connection with a potential military attack against the Islamic Republic of Iran, which constitutes a blatant violation of the U.N. Charter and international law, and threatens to push the region into a new spiral of crises and instability."
The message continues: "On February 18, 2026, the President of the United States posted on social media, including a direct public threat of using force against the Islamic Republic of Iran, stating that if Iran decided not to reach an agreement, it may be necessary for the United States to use Diego Garcia and the airport located in Fairford, to eliminate any potential attack."
The Iranian mission clarifies in its message: "Given the volatile situation in the region and the ongoing movements of the United States and its accumulation of military equipment and assets, such a hostile statement from the President of the United States should not be treated as mere rhetoric, as it indicates a real danger of military aggression, the consequences of which would be catastrophic for the region and would pose a serious threat to international peace and security."
The mission confirmed that the Islamic Republic of Iran remains fully committed to the goals and principles of the U.N. Charter and to diplomatic solutions.
It reported that Iran has engaged constructively, seriously, and in good faith in nuclear talks with the U.S. government to clearly express its concerns and demand the full and verifiable lifting of the illegal and inhumane unilateral coercive measures imposed on the Iranian people while addressing the ambiguity regarding its peaceful nuclear program based on reciprocity, in order to reach a mutually acceptable, results-oriented solution that is entirely consistent with the inalienable rights recognized for all parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
Tehran reiterated that Iran still believes that if the United States engages seriously and sincerely in these talks and respects the principles of the U.N. Charter and the peremptory norms of international law, it would be entirely possible to reach a lasting and balanced solution.
The message indicates that in this context, the Islamic Republic of Iran calls on the United Nations and all Security Council members, in accordance with the Council's primary responsibility under the U.N. Charter for the maintenance of international peace and security, to fully utilize the council's authority and good offices to ensure that the United States immediately ceases its unlawful threats of using force and complies with its obligations under the charter, particularly Article 2(4), and refrains from any actions that would escalate tensions or lead to military confrontation, which would have severe and far-reaching consequences for peace and security at both the regional and international levels.
The mission emphasized that the Security Council and the Secretary-General must act without delay before it is too late.
It clarified that the Security Council should not allow the normalization of threats of using force and acts of aggression, or legitimize them, or treat them as an acceptable political norm, or use them as tools of foreign policy, noting that this unlawful behavior, if left unaddressed, will soon turn its focus on another sovereign member state.
The message stated that the Iranian Republic has repeatedly emphasized at the highest levels that it does not seek tension or war and will not start any war.
Iran previously announced that in the event of military aggression against it, Tehran would respond decisively and proportionately in exercising its inherent right to self-defense under Article 51 of the U.N. Charter.
It emphasized that in such circumstances, all bases, facilities, and assets of hostile forces in the region would constitute legitimate targets within the context of Iran's defensive response, and the United States would bear full and direct responsibility for any unforeseen and uncontrolled consequences.
