Rubio: America under Trump Wants to Lead the 'Restoration' of the Global Order
SadaNews - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed on Saturday that the United States under President Donald Trump wants to lead the 'restoration' of the global order, while delivering a strong message calling for unity with Europe, stating that Washington's fate is closely tied to that of Europe and that it does not intend to abandon the transatlantic alliance.
In a speech at the Munich Security Conference, Rubio strongly defended President Trump's political approach, dispelling fears of a greater distance between the United States and Europe.
During his address, Rubio said, "We take our future and your future seriously," talking about a "tangled fate".
He added, "We want Europe to be strong," emphasizing the need to "revitalize" the alliance between America and Europe.
This speech marks a radical shift from the remarks made by US Vice President J.D. Vance from the same platform a year ago, when he launched an attack on European leaders, accusing them of restricting freedom of expression and failing to control immigration.
Rubio stated, "At a time when headlines warn of the end of an era for transatlantic relations, let it be known and clear to all that this is not our goal, nor our desire, because for us, as Americans, our home may be in the Western Hemisphere, but we will always remain children of Europe."
Regarding the war in Ukraine, Rubio indicated that he "does not know" whether Russia wants to end the war in Ukraine.
He also affirmed that the United States does not seek to "divide" NATO, but rather to "stimulate it".
At the beginning of his speech, Rubio praised the history of the transatlantic alliance since the post-war period, but pointed out that mistakes have been made, speaking about the transfer of sovereignty of countries to international organizations at a time when adversaries are strengthening their armament. The US Secretary also criticized the restrictions arising from climate policies.
Rubio also addressed the implications of uncontrolled migration, stating that the United States is now correcting these mistakes.
He added, "We made these mistakes together," emphasizing that the United States is ready to correct these mistakes on its own, but prefers to do so with the Europeans, saying, "We are part of one civilization, which is Western civilization."
The Secretary also noted that the United States wants under Trump to lead the 'renewal and restoration' of the global system.
Rubio said, "The United States is driven by a vision for a proud and sovereign future, vibrant enough to match our civilization's past." He continued, "While we are prepared, if necessary, to do this alone, we prefer and hope to do it with you, our friends here in Europe."
