The Election Commission Receives an Amendment to the Law on Local Authority Elections 2026
SadaNews - The Central Election Commission received today, Tuesday, an amendment to the decision of Law No. (23) for the year 2025 regarding the election of local authority councils and its amendments, issued by President Mahmoud Abbas today, January 27, 2026.
The decree stipulates the amendment of paragraph (2) of Article 16 of the original law to read as follows:
"Approval from the candidates of the list to accept their nomination in the list, and their commitment to the Palestine Liberation Organization as the legitimate and sole representative of the Palestinian people and its political and national program, as well as relevant international legitimacy resolutions."
The decree also included an amendment to paragraph 1 of Article 19 to read as follows:
"Candidates wishing to run for membership in rural councils shall be registered according to the systems and procedures of the commission and on the form that the commission prepares for this purpose, accompanied by a declaration from the candidate committing to the Palestine Liberation Organization as the legitimate and sole representative of the Palestinian people and its political and national program, along with relevant international legitimacy resolutions."
