President Abbas discusses the latest political developments with Putin
SadaNews - President Mahmoud Abbas of the State of Palestine met with President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation in a summit held at the presidential palace in the Russian capital, Moscow, on Thursday, to discuss the latest political developments in the Palestinian territories.
Prior to the meeting of the two presidents, official reception ceremonies were held for President Abbas at the Kremlin.
The president thanked his Russian counterpart for his country's supportive and allied positions towards the Palestinian people and their just cause in international forums, which confirm the strength of the friendship ties between Palestine and Russia.
President Abbas discussed with President Putin bilateral relations and the historical friendship bonds that exist between the two countries and friendly peoples, and ways to enhance and develop them in all areas, serving the interests of both peoples. They also discussed a number of regional and international issues of common interest.
The president informed his Russian counterpart about the latest political developments and conditions in the Palestinian territories, especially what is happening in the Gaza Strip. He emphasized the necessity of fully implementing President Donald Trump's plan, which would lead to the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces and the start of the reconstruction process, while underscoring the central role of the Palestinian National Authority in managing the sector and unifying the Palestinian land. He stressed the importance of linking the institutions of the Authority in the West Bank and Gaza, and not creating administrative, legal, and security systems that consolidate duality and division.
The president affirmed the urgent need to halt settlement activities, put an end to the terrorism of settlers in the West Bank, including Jerusalem, release the withheld Palestinian funds, and halt all actions that undermine the Palestinian Authority and the two-state solution.
He underscored the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state with full sovereignty on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, a single state, with one system, one law, and one legitimate weapon, living in security and peace with its neighbors.
The president also insisted on advancing the implementation of a comprehensive national reform program aimed at developing and modernizing the legal and institutional framework of the State of Palestine, reinforcing the rule of law, enhancing the principles of good governance, transparency, and accountability, and ensuring the separation of powers.
Following the summit meeting between the president and his Russian counterpart, an expanded meeting was held with the Palestinian and Russian delegations present, during which the current situation and prospects for developing bilateral relations between the two countries in trade, economic, cultural, and humanitarian fields were discussed, including accelerating the holding of the joint ministerial committee between the two governments.
