Trump Addresses Norway: Because Your Country Decided Not to Grant Me the Nobel, I Am No Longer Obligated to Think Exclusively About Peace

SadaNews - President Donald Trump stated in a message to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre that he no longer feels "obligated to think exclusively about peace" after not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize announced by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, reiterating his demand for control over Greenland.

Støre stated in a statement today, Monday, that this message came after a brief letter sent by the Norwegian Prime Minister and Finnish President Alexander Stubb to Trump opposing his decision to impose tariffs on European allies who refused to allow the United States to take control of Greenland.

Trump had threatened to impose an additional 10% tariff effective February 1st, which could rise to 25% in June, "until a complete and comprehensive agreement is reached for the purchase of Greenland."

Trump wrote in the message, "Because your country has decided not to grant me the Nobel Peace Prize despite my stopping over 8 wars, I no longer feel obligated to think solely about peace, even though it will always be the most important thing, and I can now consider what serves the interests of the United States."

For his part, Støre clarified that he has repeatedly assured Trump that the Nobel Committee, which awards the prize, is independent and that the Norwegian government has no authority over it. He said, "I explained clearly, including to President Trump, that the prize is awarded by an independent committee."

Trump has launched a public campaign to win the Nobel Peace Prize, which was awarded last year to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.

Machado presented her gold medal to Trump during a meeting at the White House last week, despite the committee's confirmation that the prize is non-transferable, non-sharing, and cannot be revoked.

Once again, Trump questioned in the message the sovereignty of Denmark over Greenland, saying, "Denmark cannot protect this land from Russia or China, and why do they even have the right to its ownership?"

He added, "There are no written documents; the only thing is that a ship landed there hundreds of years ago, and we have ships there too." Trump continued, "The world will not be safe until we have full and absolute control over Greenland."

Greenland enjoys self-governance and is a mineral-rich island that is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, located in the Arctic.

Since returning to office a year ago, the U.S. president has frequently spoken about controlling the vast island located between North America and Europe, justifying it with "national security" considerations amid what he sees as Russian and Chinese advancements in the Arctic.
