Trump to Sisi: Ready to Resume Mediation Between Egypt and Ethiopia
SadaNews - U.S. President Donald Trump stated in a message sent on Friday evening to his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah El-Sisi that the United States is ready to resume mediation between Egypt and Ethiopia to help resolve the issue of Nile River water sharing.
In the message published on the "Truth Social" platform, he wrote: "I am ready to resume American mediation between Egypt and Ethiopia to responsibly and finally resolve the issue of Nile water sharing." He added: "I would like to help you reach a solution that meets the water needs of Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia."
He noted that a permanent agreement for all Nile Basin countries could be reached through negotiations and American coordination among the parties. He emphasized that "resolving the tensions related to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is at the top of my priorities."
He pointed out that it is possible to ensure the release of water amounts during drought periods in Egypt and Sudan by adopting a successful approach. Additionally, Ethiopia can generate large amounts of electricity and either grant or sell some of it to Egypt or Sudan.
He asserted that "no country should unilaterally control the waters of the Nile."
He praised Sisi for his role in managing the security and humanitarian challenges in Egypt and the region since October 7, 2023.
