Casualties in Armed Attack Near Johannesburg, South Africa
SadaNews - On Sunday, police in South Africa announced that 10 people were killed and 10 others injured in an armed attack carried out by unknown assailants in the town of Beksraald, located about 40 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg, marking the second mass shooting incident in the country this month, according to the French Press Agency.
The police stated that the assailants fired indiscriminately at the victims in the town's streets, indicating that the motives for the attack are still unknown.
The agency quoted the spokesperson for the Gauteng police, Brigadier Brenda Murideli, saying that 10 people had lost their lives, and their identities are not yet known, adding that some victims were randomly targeted in the streets.
The police reported that the attack occurred near an informal bar in Beksraald, a poor area located near several of the country's major gold mines, confirming that the injured were taken to hospitals for treatment.
It noted that the site was known for illegally selling alcohol.
This attack comes just a few days after another shooting incident that occurred on December 6, when gunmen stormed an inn near the capital Pretoria and killed 12 people, including a 3-year-old child.
South Africa suffers from high crime rates and is among the countries with the highest murder rates in the world, despite its population of about 63 million people.
