How to Protect Your Children from Household Dust Contaminants
SadaNews - The German Federal Association of Consumer Organizations stated that if there are semi-volatile contaminants in the home, such as certain plasticizers, insulation materials, flame retardants, wood preservatives, or pesticides, they are likely to end up in household dust.
The association added that young children, who often play on the floor and tend to put everything in their mouths, are particularly vulnerable to these contaminants.
Vacuum Cleaning
To protect children from the health risks posed by these contaminants, parents should frequently clean the floors with a vacuum cleaner and regularly wipe the floor with a damp cloth.
It is also essential to continuously ventilate the home, taking care to open the windows wide.
Products Free from Solvents and Fragrances
When cleaning, parents are advised to use products that do not contain solvents, fragrances, or preservatives; as cleaners and specialized care products such as furniture polish and carpet sprays unnecessarily pollute indoor air.
When renovating the home, low-pollution wall and floor paints should be chosen. It is also advisable to avoid dirt-resistant carpets or carpets treated with stain protection; although these carpets may seem reasonable at first glance, especially in homes with infants or small children, these products are often protected from dirt by insulation factors such as so-called perfluorinated organic compounds (PFCs and PFAS), many of which are harmful to health and can accumulate in the body.
